LATISSIMUS DORSI FLAP BREAST RECONSTRUCTION

Typically used for women with smaller breasts – the Latissimus Flap technique uses your own living tissue,
taken from your back to create a new, natural looking breast…

Breast Reconstruction Before and After Photos

Breast Reconstruction can be performed at the time of the mastectomy - under the same anesthetic - allowing you to wake up with a breast mound in place – or it can be performed later when you’ve fully recovered from your mastectomy.  Latissimus Dorsi Flap breast reconstruction involves use of a flap of skin and muscle from the back on the same side as the operated breast.  This is transferred forward to create a new breast that will look and feel natural since it is your own living tissue.  This technique is appropriate for women who have had a mastectomy and who lack excess abdominal tissue – or who have had certain previous abdominal incisions.  The Latissimus Flap technique may be a safer option for women who are at risk for the TRAM Flap technique. Using the Latissimus Flap - the blood supply is highly dependable - there are no abdominal complications – and it is helpful when more tissue is needed to cover an implant after radiation or for other reasons.

BENEFITS OF LATISSIMUS FLAP BREAST RECONSTRUCTION:

  • LATISSIMUS Flap is one today’s primary flap reconstruction techniques
  • LATISSIMUS Flap uses living muscle, skin & tissue from your back
  • LATISSIMUS Flap reconstruction can be done right after mastectomy surgery
  • LATISSIMUS Flap provides a highly dependable blood supply
  • LATISSIMUS Flap involves no abdominal complications
  • LATISSIMUS Flap covers implants after radiation or when more tissue is needed
  • LATISSIMUS Flap reconstructions are becoming tissue & function sparing
  • LATISSIMUS Flap requires meticulous skill for natural looking results

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE?

Latissimus Flap reconstruction is an excellent choice for many patients, but it is not suitable for every patient. This technique may be a safer option for patients who are at risk candidates for the Tram Flap procedure.  Latissimus Flap is a good choice for patients with excess back/bra line skin and fat. Dr. Davison can determine this during your personal consultation. You should also be in otherwise good health and have realistic expectations.

During your consultation -Dr. Davison listens carefully - as this time is critical to developing a clear understanding of your concerns & building a relationship with you.

LATISSIMUS FLAP PROCEDURE:

  • The muscle, skin and tissue are transferred forward from the back to the chest
  • The Latissimus Flap is sculpted into a breast mound.
  • A new nipple is created usually - 90 days later.
  • Surgery takes about 3-4 hours with recovery between 1-2 months.
  • This technique involves an oblique scar over the back which is noticeable when wearing open – back clothing. In normal back lines it is hidden around the bra line.
